5 January, 2015 - Page 5 - Strawberries in Winter

I love going out to my greenhouse when it's cold outside and breathing in the fragrance of green growing plants.  I try to nibble on something I have grown myself every single day.  Today, my treat will be this lovely little strawberry.  I have Alpine strawberries growing in pots and these little Toscanos growing in hanging baskets.  My greenhouse is small - 8 ft. by 12 ft. - but it is absolutely crammed full with herbs, cuttings, geraniums, fairy gardens, and succulents.  I need to rearrange things to be able to start some seedlings in the near future.

Some Red Dragon coleus... I could start these from seeds for next year, but coleus are incredibly easy to start from cuttings and I love the color they provide in winter.

I have several pots of rosemary.  I will be starting some tip cuttings soon for these.  I used some of it in a bouquet of home-grown herbs - sage, rosemary, thyme and savory which I used to season the turkey for the kids for Thanksgiving and again at Christmas.  They said it was very good.  My husband and I are on a plant based eating plan, so did not partake of the holiday turkeys.  We had plenty of leftovers to send home with the kids.  I also use a bit of rosemary to make a delicious pear rosemary jam.  It is one of those "to die for" treats we can still enjoy :)

I hope everyone is able to find some joy and peace in some bit of nature this winter season.

4 January, 2015 - Page 4 - Starting Over Again :)

I haven't blogged for a very long time.  So long, in fact, I hope I still remember how to do this.  Life has taken some interesting turns since I last wrote - many, many major changes have impacted my day to day existence on this planet.

We lost our beloved son-in-law in 2012.  He had a bad reaction to a medication his doctor prescribed to help him stop smoking and it killed him.  There are no words to describe the grief we still feel nor the disgust toward the drug company that manufactures this unnecessarily dangerous "medication".

Several months afterwards, my husband suffered a heart attack and a quadruple by-pass, which he thankfully survived.  Since then we have followed a plant-based diet urged by the cardiologist and have enjoyed many significant benefits from this, including losing about 65 lbs. each.  The plant-based diet is "uber vegan", and is detailed by Dr. Esselstynn in his book, "Forks Over Knives".  The rules are pretty simple - If "it has a face or a mother", we can't eat it or use food products from it - that means no meat, fish, poultry, fish, dairy, or eggs.  In addition, we can eat no oils, no nuts, no avocados, and no coconuts.  It took some getting used to, but we can eat all the fruits and veggies we want, as well as whole grains.  We use vegetable broth instead of oil to cook with and it works.

I fell at work last November and ended up having to have surgery this past February to fix two large rotator cuff tears and a shredded biceps tendon in my left shoulder and arm.  Recovery has been complicated and excruciatingly slow.  You use your shoulder a lot!!

So here we are.  Still breathing and ready for the next chapters.  Remember, every sunrise brings new hope.

I recently read a quote attributed to Brad Paisley... "Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365 page book.  Write a good one."

I'm starting on Page 4 this year.  It is what it is... :)
