5 January, 2015 - Page 5 - Strawberries in Winter

I love going out to my greenhouse when it's cold outside and breathing in the fragrance of green growing plants.  I try to nibble on something I have grown myself every single day.  Today, my treat will be this lovely little strawberry.  I have Alpine strawberries growing in pots and these little Toscanos growing in hanging baskets.  My greenhouse is small - 8 ft. by 12 ft. - but it is absolutely crammed full with herbs, cuttings, geraniums, fairy gardens, and succulents.  I need to rearrange things to be able to start some seedlings in the near future.

Some Red Dragon coleus... I could start these from seeds for next year, but coleus are incredibly easy to start from cuttings and I love the color they provide in winter.

I have several pots of rosemary.  I will be starting some tip cuttings soon for these.  I used some of it in a bouquet of home-grown herbs - sage, rosemary, thyme and savory which I used to season the turkey for the kids for Thanksgiving and again at Christmas.  They said it was very good.  My husband and I are on a plant based eating plan, so did not partake of the holiday turkeys.  We had plenty of leftovers to send home with the kids.  I also use a bit of rosemary to make a delicious pear rosemary jam.  It is one of those "to die for" treats we can still enjoy :)

I hope everyone is able to find some joy and peace in some bit of nature this winter season.
